In Germany 87% of Germans are choosing this material for the heat insulation of homes and only 12% prefer mineral wool. What are the advantages of heat insulation with expanded polystyrene?

Heat insulation. This characteristic is a key advantage to this material. It is mistakenly believed that the density of the material directly affects the heat-saving properties of the insulation. This is not quite true. Density refers to the physical properties such as compressive strength and flexural strength. Expanded polystyrene contains 98% oxygen, so it, particularly, has characteristics like convection, heat transfer, and emission. In fact, by reducing the density, we reduce the heat transfer and increase the value of radiation and convection.

Water absorption depends on its structural characteristics and the length of stay in a humid environment. Expanded polystyrene can be in the water for hours, while maintaining its insulating properties. Within 24 hours absorbs not more than 1.5% of moisture.

Vapor permeability doesn’t depend on its density or brand, it is always equal to 0.05 Mg/(m*h*Pa), which is equivalent to vapor permeability of timber blocks made from oak, spruce, or pine.

Material durability. According to laboratory tests expanded polystyrene has a lifespan of 40-50 years.
